AGU provides information for the public on what is known about
Earth, its planetary neighbors, and the space around them and how
the geophysical sciences are advancing.
The four fundamental
areas of the geophysical sciences are:
- Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences -
climate change, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, air quality, sea
ice, structure of the ocean bottom, biological processes.
- Solid Earth Sciences - earthquake
prediction, structure and dynamics of the Earth's deep interior,
volcanic activity, tectonic plates, mineral resources.
- Hydrologic Sciences - water supply
and quality, waste disposal, groundwater contamination, droughts,
floods, erosion.
- Space Sciences - solar storms,
cosmic rays, space weather, magnetic fields, structure and
evolution of planetary bodies.
