The first round of the infrastructure upgrades was completed today. You may
have noticed a slight service interruption this afternoon but everything is
back to normal. The next round of upgrades should take place early next week,
so check back here for the latest details.

Please read a letter from our CEO, David Bohnett.
10 December - 07:30 PST (-0800 GMT)
Due to the power outage yesterday, files that were sent to GeoCities via FTP after 4:50 P.M.
PST, did not transfer into your directory until this morning. If you sent files to us
after that time, please check your directory to make sure they arrived safely. Everything that
was sent should have moved into your directory by now. If you modified your member name or
password between the time you sent your files and 7:00 A.M. today, it is likely that your
files will not be in your directory, and you will need to resend them.
GeoCities Operations Team
9 December - 20:30 PST (-0800 GMT)
Parts of GeoCities were down for several hours this evening due to an outage
at our local network provider. Among other things, this affected our chat
servers and caused us to postpone the second GeoCities Dating Game, which
had originally been scheduled for 6 p.m. PST. The
Dating Game will now be held on
Friday December 13. (See the events calendar for details.)
GeoCities Development Team
8 December - 15:40 PST (-0800 GMT)
This is further information about the recent outage at GeoCities.
We are continuing to restore files in a few of our neighborhoods -
Specifically - CapeCanaveral, Colosseum/Field, CollegePark, EnchantedForest
and SoHo/Lofts. You may notice that some pages in these neighborhoods are
either missing or contain broken GIF's. We anticipate to complete our
restore in these five neighborhoods by Monday morning.
We ask that homesteaders in these neighborhoods refrain, if possible, from
updating their pages until we have completed our restore. Any changes to your
pages made during the restore may be lost. We will update this announcements
page as soon as the backup for these neighborhoods is complete.
The other neighborhoods affected by the outage were - Broadway, Heartland/Plains, SiliconValley/Park, SunsetStrip/Alley, Hollywood/Hills, MotorCity, and
SiliconValley/Heights.
Homesteaders in these seven neighborhoods as well as the
five previously mentioned will need to re-upload any changes to
their pages made on Friday, December 6.
Please read the next announcement for further background. We appreciate
your patience as we restore GeoCities to full operation.
GeoCities Operations Team
7 December - 12:52 PST (-0800 GMT)
This is a special announcement about the recent outage at GeoCities.
The recent outage at GeoCities was due to a power failure at our ISP's
facility and then file system problems related to the power outage. The
power failure occurred between 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM PST on Friday,
December 6. As a result of the power outage one of our main file servers
did not return to full operational status. We have restored all data on
the file server from the most recent backup tape, and we expect
GeoCities to resume full operation sometime mid-day on Saturday. A
number of neighborhoods were stored on the file system that was restored from
backup tape.
Homesteaders who modified their pages on Friday, December 6, are
encouraged to check the status of their sites. Some homesteaders may
need to re-submit any updates that were previously submitted on Friday
the 6th. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may have caused, and
we're working diligently to ensure minimal disruption in the future. As
always, we appreciate your continued interest and support of GeoCities.
For more questions and answers please have a look at our special GeoCities Q&A;

7 December - 03:43 PST (-0800 GMT)
Due to a power outage some of the images and pages within GeoCities are
not loading properly. We are aware of the situation and are working to
restore all files. Please check back for current updates. We apologize for
any inconvenience and will do our best to recover as quickly as possible.
GeoCities Operations
3 December - 15:40 PST (-800 GMT)
We have just completed adding all lost traffic counts to those counters that were lowered last
week. If yours was changed, you should notice an increased count as of 3:00 p.m. PST this afternoon.
We apologize for this situation but are confident that the current numbers are accurate.
GeoCities Development team
27 November - 16:50 PST (-800 GMT)
Most of the system upgrades are complete, but we will continue to add new hardware to the network
over the next several weeks to meet the growing demand for homesteader pages in GeoCities. We know
that some systems on the site are not fully operational yet, but we are working to locate and repair
them as fast as we can.
We are also aware of some counters being affected by the recent changes. We are working on restoring
them to their correct visitor count, but it will likely be early next week before complete repairs
are made. We sincerely apologize for the problem, and pledge to you that it won't happen again.
Thank you for your understanding and patience.
GeoCities Development Team
26 November - 21:50 PST (-800 GMT)
The infrastructure upgrades will continue through the night and into the early morning hours. We will post another announcement tomorrow morning with further
updates.
Thanks a lot for your patience as we continue to build a stronger GeoCities.
GeoCities Development Team
26 November - 7:00 PST (-800 GMT)
GeoCities is undergoing some system upgrades today which will render some areas of the site
unreachable for portions of the day. We will do everything possible to minimize your inconvenience
during this period. None of the homesteader utilities
will be affected by this upgrade, with the possible exception of the EZ File Upload Utility.
However, you will still be able to upload your files through the
normal FTP procedures.
Additionally, the application process will not be affected, so feel free to
apply for residency in the neighborhood of your choice.
GeoCities Development Team
12 November - 13:00 PST (-800 GMT)
GeoCities is back in full operation again. We have installed a new database server and performance
appears to be improved. Please let us know if you
notice an improvement in response time, especially when
accessing your account or editing your pages.
Thank you for your understanding during this period of "read-only" access.
GeoCities Development team
11 November - 17:00 PST (-800 GMT)
GeoCities will be in "read-only" mode tomorrow 11/12/96 from 9:30 PST to 12:30 PST. You will still be able to
browse the neighborhoods, but will be unable to update or
create any files in your directory. Additionally, applications for new residency will not be
processed during this period. We are upgrading our database to provide faster response times.

As a result of some system upgrades last week, some welcome letters
containing your initial password were inadvertently dropped by our system.
Therefore, earlier today we remailed welcome letters to anyone that hadn't yet moved
in as of about 11:00 a.m., PST today. Please check your email for the welcome letter and
let us know if you haven't received it.
GeoCities Development Team
6 November - 16:00 PST (-800 GMT)
We will upgrade our FTP server today which requires us to take it off line from
10:00 PST - 18:00 PST. During this time you will not be able to upload
any files to your directory. Please check back here often for more information.

23 October - 11:00 PDT (-800 GMT)
Our mail servers (mail.geocities.com) were down for 1 - 2 hours this morning. During this time you were probably not able to send or receive any mail using your GeoCities e-mail account.
Everything is back to normal again and we apologize for this inconvenience.
GeoCities Development Team

Moving day is finally here! It's an exciting day for us at GeoCities, but moving requires
few hours of downtime for several areas of
GeoCities. When we come back online, we'll be in our new offices in Santa Monica.
GeoCities Development Team
24 September 1996 - 16:20 PDT (-0800 GMT)
Sorry for the delay, but the FTP server is back on line. You may once again transfer your files via
FTP, or you can always use our new
EZ File Upload Utility.
Thank you for your understanding during this downtime.
GeoCities Development Team
24 September 1996 - 10:40 PDT (-0800 GMT)
We are upgrading the operating system on the FTP server today, and will need to take it
offline for about 4 hours. Between the hours of 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM Los Angeles time,
you will not even be able to connect to the FTP server to send us files. However, our new
EZ File Upload Utility will still be operating normally,
and you may use it to transfer any files that you need to.
If you attempt to connect to the FTP server during this time, you will likely receive an error
message such as "unable to connect to server", or "connection refused by host", or possibly
"unable to locate host". Again, this will only occur for about 4 hours today, and we will post
an announcement when operation is back to normal.
Thank you for you patience during this system upgrade.
GeoCities Development Team
12 September 1996 - 09:40 PDT (-0800 GMT)
We have resumed normal operations again. Please
let us know if you notice any difference in the way the system responds. We are especially
interested in comments relating to any of the member utilities or the residential
neighborhood address blocks.
Thanks for your understanding during the upgrade.
GeoCities Development Team
12 September 1996 - 09:40 PDT (-0800 GMT)
GeoCities will be in "read-only" mode for about 2 hours today, beginning around
10:15 (PDT) this morning. You may browse the pages of GeoCities freely, but will not be
able to make any changes to your home page. This downtime is necessary in order to
install a new database server, which will vastly improve your GeoCities experience.
Thank you for your support as we continually strive to make GeoCities better.
GeoCities Development Team
09 August 1996 - 16:25 PDT (-0800 GMT)
We've experienced some growing pains with the FANTASTIC response to our free email offer
which has resulted in some performance problems when sending or receiving email. We believe
that these issues have been resolved and that the mail server is now much more responsive.
We'd like to hear your comments about continued
sluggishness or, hopefully, improved performance.
There are, however, still some problems retrieving mail using Netscape on a Macintosh
operating system. These issues will be resolved as soon as possible.
Additionally, we have had to place a few restrictions on the member email program. They
are as follows:
- Mail left on the server over 7 days will be deleted. Please
configure your Netscape browser to remove mail
from server.
- All accounts are limited to 500kB of mailbox space at one time. This should be plenty for
everyone, as long as mail is downloaded and removed from the server on a regular basis.
Thank you for your understanding during this beta period. We are constantly working to
improve this system, and will keep you updated on our progress.

GeoCities has resolved the difficulties with the "old" FTP process. See the following
announcement for a new improved way to upload your files.
GeoCities Administration
08 August 1996 - 14:35 PDT (-0800 GMT)
GeoCities is experiencing some difficulties with the "old" FTP process. Some of you may notice
that your files don't arrive in your directory after you've sent them. We are working to remedy
this problem, and should have it resolved later today.
However, we strongly recommend that you use our new
EZ File Upload Utility to transfer your files. This new process eliminates the need to log in to
the FTP server, rename the files with your membername and password, and wait for them to transfer
to your directory. Everything is done for you with this new utility, and the files are sent directly
to your GeoCities directory. If you've ever had problems with the FTP process, this is the
answer you've been looking for.

GeoCities is pleased to present our GeoRewards program. This is our latest
effort to reward our homesteaders for building great web sites, and remaining loyal to GeoCities.
GeoRewards allows you to win great prizes and draw more visitors to your site. All the work you've
put into your site now pays off with GeoCities new GeoRewards program.

GeoCities is pleased to announce another innovative utility designed to make your homesteading
experience more enjoyable. This latest creation eliminates the need to use FTP utilities, for anyone that
uses Netscape 2.0 or greater.
Our new EZ File Upload Utility allows you to upload
files directly into your GeoCities directory, without having to log on to the FTP server at all.
Be sure to give it a try and see how easy this process can be.

30 July 1996 - 8:25 PDT (-0800 GMT)
This weekend, GeoCities added two new items to its long list of free services.
The first is a VRML 3-D Chat room that allows you to
see animated representations of the other people in the room. You'll need to download the
CyberGate Browser first (FREE!), and then you'll be able to join the other GeoCitizens in
GeoWorld, the first totally interactive chat environment at GeoCities.
The second is the introduction of free GeoCities Email
as part of your free membership in GeoCities. Every GeoCitizen is now entitled to a free GeoCities Email
account, and will be reachable at "membername@geocities.com". This is a permanent email address
that you may keep as long as you remain in GeoCities.
We hope that you enjoy these new services, and welcome your
feedback on these and other GeoCities services.
